THE JENSEN FAMILY

Charles Johannes Jensen's (my grandfather's) maternal grandparents were said to have been "in" Ireland, his paternal grandparents in Denmark. This suggests that his mother may have been Irish but we don't know her name. His father was of the gentry class with an estate as late as 1900.

Charles Jensen learned the printing trade through an apprenticeship. As a journeyman printer he traveled throughout Europe. My father, Harry Jensen, recalls his father talking about traveling between France and Germany during the Franco-Prussian War, 7/19/1870 - 5/10/1871. Charles turned 15 on 11/29/1870. This war was started by Napoleon III, on a futile mission to realize a pet political theory and was ended by Otto Von Bismarck, The Iron Chancellor. Twenty years later, when he saw that he might be conscripted for some new war(???), Charles came to New York, on September 2, 1890 at the age of 36, sailing from Hamburg on the Kurfurst Bismarck on August 27th.

Hans Christian Jensen was one of the first dance teachers in Copenhagen at the end of the 1800s. Frederick Wilhelm Franck was a blacksmith who made vaults and safes. His daughter, Esther Franck, danced for about 15 years throughout Europe with a noted dance troupe. Later, her husband, Eric Magnussen, was an art deco silversmith who was compared to Cellini and whose work can be found in museums.
